  REVIEW:

Morale of the story:  Hot chicks, don’t be nice to losers!  Because, if you’re best friends – but “just friends” - with some dorky, pathetic, loyal-to-a-fault guy, rest assured that he will always be totally obsessed with you!  It’s better to torture him now, than to torture him forever.

Ryan Reynold’s (Chris) character is the very chubby, super unpopular, odd kid in high school that has a huge crush on his best friend who happens to be the gorgeous cheerleader (Amy Smart).  His problem is, he’s in the “friend” zone.  After his self confidence is crushed by the star of the football team, he leaves town determined to one day get even.  10 years later, he is a trim, gorgeous, highly successful womanizer.  His record producer boss sends him on a mission to sign a new singer (Anna Faris) who has lots of looks and very little talent.  Circumstances land him and the hot singer right back in his home town where he comes face to face with his past.  He enlists the help of his horny brother to distract the singer while he chases after the cheerleader.  He manages to get beat up by a little girl, nearly gets electrocuted, is relentlessly stalked by the hot singer and sets Rudolph the red nosed reindeer on fire.  His naïve mother, competitive bother and psycho client lead him down a comical path that ultimately brings him and the cheerleader together.

While Just Friends does highlight the comical side of unnatural obsession, the movie nonetheless reminds us of the importance of good therapy and timely restraining orders.  Actually, as far as traditional romantic comedies go, this one’s not bad.  As far as Ryan Reynolds/Anna Faris movies go (i.e. the unbearable Waiting), this one’s phenomenal. Although predictable, the storyline is coherent and endearing.  And, though the comedy is simple and uninventive, it’s delivered well enough to be entertaining.  All in all, it’s a cute movie that’s fun to watch.

  MOVIE NIGHT TRAFFIC LIGHT:

On the Movie Night Traffic Light on a scale of GREEN meaning “Go – it’s a must see”, YELLOW meaning “Caution – it’s okay” and RED meaning “No - stop don’t do it."

We rate Just Friends YELLOW.  If you compare this one to Ryan Reynold’s last movie, Waiting, this would be green.  But compared to all movies, this one is pretty good, but not great.
